The USS George Washington (SSBN-598) was the first ballistic missile submarine of the United States Navy. It was named after George Washington, the first President of the United States. The submarine was launched on June 9, 1959, and was commissioned on December 30, 1960.
The George Washington-class submarines were the first to have a Polaris missile system onboard. The Submarine was equipped with 16 missile tubes and carried 16 Polaris A1 missiles. The submarine's crew consisted of 13 officers and 130 enlisted men.
During the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, the George Washington was one of the submarines that were involved in the blockade of Cuba. The submarine also participated in other Cold War operations and was decommissioned in 1985 after serving for over two decades.
After being decommissioned, the submarine was converted into an experimental submarine for testing new submarine technologies. It was then decommissioned for the second time in 1992 and was finally scrapped in 1998.
